I have a question about wireless routers like Linksys?
Ive seen some wireless routers at Walmart and i would like to know how they work. Do you just set it up to your modem, or does it work by itself, but you need to pay a service charge? Thanks Thanks. But I also noticed that when I find a Linksys on my portable devices, the Linksys never has a password. Is there anyway to set one?

- there is no fee, yes you run it thru your modem
- You connect a wireless router to your DSL or Cable or Satellite network bridge. Then you disconnect the power from your DSL, Cable or Sattelite network bridge for 5-10 seconds. Leave the wireless router plugged in to power and connected to the Cable, DSL or Sattelite network bridge. Plug the power back in to your bridge. Now you have a wireless LAN of your very own. Now you need to secure it properly. You pay once for the wireless router. You do not pay your ISP, or DSL or Cable company any differently than you did before. If you don't have an existing connection to the Internet, a wireless router will not fix that. The wireless router merely creates a mechanism for sharing the existing Internet connection with up to 253 potential devices. You don't pay any service charge for the wireless network that now surrounds portions of your home. You are the administrator of your wireless LAN. When something goes wrong, it's your headache. If the wireless router dies, you have to buy a new one. If the wireless card in your laptop or computer dies you have to replace it. If there's a problem you can't fix, you call a wireless network engineer and security specialist, like myself. I charge $75/hour to fix your problem. Or you can call Geeksquad or Firedog and pay them $250 per visit to attempt to fix your problem and offer you more hardware and services than you actually need. There's a synapsis, if you want the in depth technical detail of what a wireless router does take a look at the wiki article on wireless routers.
- In a standard wired home network the system looks like this Each client computer must have an Ethernet Card Internet > Modem >> router WAN Port Router LAN Port #1 >> Computer #1 Router LAN Port #2 >> Computer #2 ... for as many ports and computers as you have >> are Ethernet Cables You get your Internet from your ISP - which you pay a monthly fee for A Home Wireless system is just the same except that each computer has a wireless card Internet > Modem >> Wireless router WAN Port Wireless Router >>> Computer #1 Wireless Router >>> Computer #2 ... for as many computers as you have Where >>> is the wireless signal All wireless does for a home system is replace the Ethernet Cable You still have to get your Internet from the ISP As to how they work, the wireless router is the base station and controller. Each wireless card is a client station. The wireless cards talk only to the base station, not to each other The router controls all communication (both ways) with it's clients using a radio signal. Hope that helps
