High Speed Wireless Router

wireless routers?

ok, i got problem. Which is better? i go buy a wireless router from them, MTS, (company takes care of internet, phone. etc.) and they come at my house and then they will connect it. They will charge me about $200. or i just go buy a wireless router outside, let's say best buy and figure it out how to connect it (which i don't really know how?????and don't any much about routers) then my parents tell me that we just go buy a wireless router outside, they don't even know what a router is (LOL). Now, i really want to get a good reason why i should pick either go to mts and let them do all the stuff or go outside and buy a wireless router and figure it out on my own.

  1. Just go buy your own, its really cheaper that way. See the manual below on how to fix it up. It's almost the same for all routers.
  2. this is my opinion but $200 to hook up WiFi is a rip off Its not that hard buy a netgear router there routers are easy to set up and have step by step instructions on how to do it and online and phone support.
  3. I'm with the guys above me. Buy your own for about $60. I like Linksys. The installation software walks you through the complete setup with instructions and pictures, including encryption. $200 is a total ripoff any way you look at it.
  4. Man, if I could get $200 every time someone wanted me to hook up their wireless router, I'd be rich by now. FORGET MTS!!! Go to your local electronics store; heck it doesn't even have to be an electronics store! Go to WalMart, Target, Office Max, Best Buy, etc. and pick up a wireless router. My personal preference is the Linksys brand; while they aren't the cheapest or the most expensive, they are a solid brand. You shouldn't have to spend more than about $50 for the router. Set up the router at home by plugging it in between your high speed connection and your computer. Then log in to the router's web-based configuration page as described in it's directions. Make sure you reset the SSID on the router and set some kind of encryption on the wireless signal; it isn't foolproof, but it will stop most from stealing your signal. This will all be documented in the pamphlet you get with the router. Also, write your security settings on a mailing label and stick it right on your router - at some time in the future when you buy a new computer and need to hook it to the router, you'll have your settings.
  5. I agree with those above. Buy your own. I like Linksys, but NetGear is good too. Both will come with a Quick-Start Guide. You should be able to use straight out of the box, just make sure you change the default password. For Linksys they usually default to 'Admin', change it to whatever you want. You may want to write down your password on the Quick-Start Guide for reference. You may also want to enable encryption (WPA or WEP). WPA is more secure. I would get everything running first, then enable encryption a day or two later so you know that it works before you enable encryption so if you have problems you know you smucked up your WPA/WEP settings.
